Mondale's Henchman
   MAKING THE STATUE

PAGE TWO: THE MAKING OF MONDALE'S HENCHMAN, A PHOTO JOURNAL.

Two close up images side by side of the miniature torso with aluminum wire wrapped around forehead to style hair and clay on face and hand for revision the other image shows the completed statue with some face damage
Analyzing the face it was clear I had to resculpt it, save the eyes. I've never shied from redoing a finished part so the face wasn't going to change my ways.
Two images side by side in a close up of miniature statue posing with clenched fist and open hand and fingers with a serious expression and facial battle damage
The results were better than I expected. The gloss varnish really made the face pop out simulating a sweaty and slightly swollen face from the battle damage.
Three images side by side by side showing red felt in stages of pattern and textile work, black marker lines for stitching and pastel coloring to replicate a mini Afghani rug
The Afghani rug the duo fought on will be replicated as part of the base. I used fine felt and mark the textile pattern with pencil crayon and a fine black marker for the stitching accents. Fabric pastels to fill in the patternwork.
Two three images side by side by side show the completed replicated miniature Afghani rug on small cutting mat and small metal tray
Once the coloring is done, I smudge and weather the rug to make it appear aged. Spray it down with a strong sealant. The metal tray will be the base and because it is metallic, the magnets embedded in the soles of the statue's shoes will keep him from falling over.
Three images side by side by side displaying closeup of wooden panels that were fitted over the sides of the metal tray and coated in stone clay
The metal tray is fitted with wooden panels and coated with a thin layer of stone clay. Since the clay is lightweight, the loss in magnetism between the shoe magnets and metal tray is minimal.
Two images side by side in a close up show the base in stages of being painted and square tiles carved into the clay surface with rustic colors applied as a base coat
The squares carved into the clay surface are to be floor tilings. I apply two to three coats of paint to the tiles and side boards. I leave the center of the base unpainted for sake of the magnets.
Two images side by side in a close up showing Marten Go's hand holding the finished base with the detailings of the base and miniature Afghani rug
Applied semi-gloss varnish on the tiles and weathering effects for grout, the base is nearly complete. The felt rug has a sticky backside and with that in place it is just about there.
Thomas, the other statue and Mondale's Henchman face each other posing as they get ready to fight another round
Since these statues are prototypes, they are basically a work in progress. There are some areas I'd like to touch up and rework but for now, I can live with them. See the latest gallery shots--link below.
